Blue Faery continues its liver cancer awareness and prevention program during AAPI Month
This May, Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association proudly continues its award-winning Love Your Liver campaign, now in its fifth consecutive year. This life-saving, culturally tailored initiative raises awareness about liver cancer risk factors impacting Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities.
Asian Americans are twice as likely as White Americans to be infected with chronic hepatitis B, the leading cause of liver cancer in this population. Foreign-born Asian Americans face even higher risks. The lack of early symptoms, coupled with language, stigma, and access barriers, makes liver cancer one of the most significant health disparities in this community.
Blue Faery Recognizes Excellence in Liver Cancer Research
Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association announces the Blue Faery Award (BFA) for Excellence in Liver Cancer Research recipient. Primary liver cancer, also known as Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), remains the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Blue Faery established the award to honor medical professionals conducting groundbreaking research to improve patient outcomes.
The winner, Dr. Mark Yarchoan, said, "I am deeply honored to receive the Blue Faery Award, which not only supports liver cancer research but also highlights the strength of the community driving progress in this field."
Love Your Liver: Blue Faery Amplifies Health Awareness During Black History Month
Blue Faery is proud to announce the continuation of its annual Love Your Liver campaign during Black History Month, marking the fourth consecutive year of this impactful and award-winning initiative. This campaign aims to raise awareness about liver disease and cancer within Black/African American communities, who are 1.5 times more likely to develop liver cancer compared to the general population.
Community members can understand their specific liver cancer risks through the Love Your Liver program and learn about proactive management strategies. Conditions such as type 2 diabetes and hepatitis C can lead to liver cancer, making education and early detection crucial for improving survival rates.
Blue Faery Continues Its Love Your Liver Campaign During Hispanic Heritage Month
Love Your Liver helps raise awareness about liver cancer risk factors in the Hispanic community, as they are 2.5 times as likely to develop the disease compared with White Americans. Due to the high prevalence of fatty liver disease in the community, liver cancer continues to be one of the most significant health issues that Hispanic Americans face. Besides the stigma of liver cancer and fatty liver disease, Hispanic Americans also face language and cultural barriers and lack culturally appropriate educational programs. Love Your Liver delivers culturally relevant education about liver cancer risk factors, liver cancer surveillance, and treatments while offering hope.

Patient Advocacy: A Powerful Force in Health Care
Patients faced with a serious diagnosis are often confronted with more questions than answers. Dealing with the shock of unexpected illness, while simultaneously learning about treatment options and navigating the labyrinth of insurance claims, can be overwhelming.
Andrea Wilson Woods, founder and president of Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association, found out firsthand about the challenges facing both those suffering from liver cancer and those who care for them.
Blue Faery hopes to sprinkle some magic dust to boost liver cancer awareness for the Black community
Black Americans are 50% more likely to suffer with liver cancer than the general population meaning the need for diagnosis and treatment is high.
Blue Faery Continues Its Love Your Liver Campaign During Black History Month
Black/African Americans are 50% more likely to get liver cancer than the general population, and incidence rates are climbing. The Love Your Liver campaign provides community members with convenient opportunities to learn more about their unique liver cancer risks and how to actively manage them. Type 2 diabetes and hepatitis C can both lead to liver cancer, so those in the Black/African American community who currently have or previously had one or both of those diseases are at higher risk for liver cancer. Both type 2 diabetes and hepatitis C are preventable and treatable, so education and early detection are vital to improving survival rates.
Love Your Liver Live, a Black History Month Community Event series, kicks off on February 22, 2024, at 7 p.m. ET with a live, virtual education workshop featuring Miriam Atkins, MD, a medical oncologist with multispecialty clinics in Georgia and South Carolina. The second live, virtual educational workshop will be on February 29, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET and features Gia Landry, MD, a hepatologist with Ochsner in Baton Rouge. These free virtual workshops allow community members to learn about relevant liver cancer risks and how to manage them from a trusted local physician.
Understanding Patient Perspectives During Liver Cancer Awareness Month
At AstraZeneca, our patients are at the heart of what we do. This patient-first mindset goes beyond developing treatments for our patients with liver cancer – the fastest-rising cause of cancer-related deaths in the US and the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, affecting approximately 41,000 people every year.1-3 For us, learning from—and listening to—our patients is one of the most impactful ways we can serve people living with a liver cancer diagnosis. Partnering with patient advocacy groups who serve as a trusted resource for patients is critical to better serve those affected by liver cancer and their loved ones.

“Elevar is inspired by Blue Faery’s efforts to raise understanding of and advocate for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and their families,” said Elevar Vice President of Medical Affairs Bill Strickland. “As HCC typically has a poor prognosis and a lack of treatment options, we are highly focused on bringing a new therapeutic approach to those in need, and we are proud to support the caring community Blue Faery has built by participating in its Benefactors Council.”
‘Swing Hard in Case You Hit It’: NY Yankees Legend Bernie Williams Shares Lessons from His Family’s Liver Disease Fight
You might not think about your liver health very often. If everything’s in good working order, you might not think you have to. But, according to the American Liver Foundation, liver disease affects more than 100 million Americans. The foundation cautions that when it’s left untreated, liver disease can lead to liver failure, cancer and can even be fatal—in 2020, it was the 12th leading cause of death in the US. With numbers like those, and a personal history with liver disease, former Yankees star Bernie Williams is stepping up to bat to help spread awareness about the importance of supporting your liver health.
He recently helped launch One Liver to Love in partnership with Eisai as well as Global Liver Institute (GLI) and Blue Faery, which are both patient advocacy organizations that provide education and resources to people living with liver cancer. The initiative hopes to offer support to families like Williams’ who are impacted by liver disease.
