Blue Faery Lobbies for Liver Cancer

29 January 2014

President and Founder Andrea Wilson joined Caring Ambassadors Executive Director Lorren Sandt on Capitol Hill to lobby for the Viral Hepatitis Testing Act. This bill would change the Public Health Service Act "to revise and extend the program for viral hepatitis surveillance, education and testing in order to prevent deaths from chronic liver diseases and liver cancer." The passage of this bill would ensure that all Baby Boomers would be tested for Hepatitis C, a recommendation made by the CDC more than a year ago in order to stop the rise of liver cancer in the United States.

Apply for Disability Benefits if You Have Liver Cancer

By Molly Clarke

25 January 2014

The Social Security Administration (SSA) offers disability benefits to those who cannot work due to liver cancer. The SSA offers two main types of benefits: SSDI — offered to disabled workers who have paid Social Security taxes throughout their careers and SSI — offered to disabled individuals who earn limited income. To qualify for SSI, applicants must fall within the financial limits.

To qualify, you will have to meet certain medical requirements. These requirements will evaluate your cancer’s origin, location, response to treatment and severity. Typically, your cancer will have to be inoperable, recurrent or unresponsive to treatment. Liver cancer is included in the Compassionate Allowance Listings. Through this program, individuals with debilitating conditions can qualify for benefits in as little as ten days.

You will need to prepare for the application process by gathering medical documentation, financial records and employment information. Begin the application online or by telephone. Complete the application forms with consistent, relevant and detailed information. Your responses should give the SSA insight into the limitations that you face each day.

After submitting your application, you may receive a decision in as little as ten days or as long as several months. Be aware that many applications are denied upon initial submission and are only approved after filing an appeal. For this reason, you should not give up if the SSA rejects your initial claim.

Happy Birthday Blue Faery

19 December 2013

In honor of Blue Faery's 11th birthday today, we are proud to announce 11 things we have accomplished in 11 years:

1. In 2003, we created the first ever HCC patient education brochures and have always distributed them to patients, their families and their healthcare providers at no cost to them.

2. From 2003 – 2006, Blue Faery participated in many marathons including Los Angeles, Marine Corps, Las Vegas and Vancouver as a means of fundraising. Next year, Blue Faery is restarting our fundraising program — Team Blue Faery — with a volunteer in the Los Angeles Marathon.

3. In 2006, we received many honors for our outstanding service to the community from the County of Los Angeles, State Senator Jack Scott and U.S. Congressmen Adam B. Schiff among others.

4. In 2009, we started our annual Blue Faery Award for Excellence in Liver Cancer Research to recognize a researcher who has made significant contributions in the advancement of scientific knowledge in the diagnosis, treatment, prevention or understanding of liver cancer.

5. In 2010, Southwest Airlines Spirit magazine interviewed President Andrea Wilson as part of their feature article titled "Meet Burbank."

6. In 2010, inspired by Blue Faery Star Kathie Bryson, we began our Adrienne Wilson Spirit Award program to acknowledge patients who are advocates for themselves and others while fighting liver cancer.

7. In 2011, Les Brown' s talk radio show On Your Corner interviewed Founder Andrea Wilson to discuss Adrienne's Story and the founding of Blue Faery. Click Les Brown live broadcast to hear the show.

8. In 2011, Bayer Healthcare gave Blue Faery a $10,000 grant to fund the Liver Cancer Patient Education and Medical Professional Awareness Project.

9. Blue Faery has been designated the recipient of the proceeds from the annual Rhino Invitational Golf Tournament since 2007 and the Liver Shiver since 2013.

10. In 2013, Blue Faery was named the Best of Burbank in the Charity category due to our positive image of small business in the way we serve our community.

11. Last month, Blue Faery attended the Liver Cancer Roundtable — the first ever national discussion about liver cancer. As a result, Blue Faery is now a member of the National Virus Hepatitis Roundtable; President Andrea Wilson has joined the Caring Ambassadors' Hepatitis Leadership Corp; and Blue Faery will be tackling more issues of advocacy for liver cancer patients with the support of our new partners in the future.

To our generous donors who make it possible for us to fulfill our mission, we thank you.

We also ask that you think of Blue Faery during the holiday season and remember that we must receive your 2013 donation no later than December 31 for it to count on your 2013 tax return so mail it ASAP or Donate Now. Thank you again for your continued support and generosity.

Blue Faery goes to Washington

6 November 2013

Blue Faery participated in the Liver Cancer Roundtable — the first ever national discussion about liver cancer. Organized by the Caring Ambassadors Program, the Liver Cancer Roundtable brought together leading experts including hepatologists, transplant surgeons and oncologists; government employees from CDC, NIH and HHS; pharmaceutical company representatives; and charities in order to create a liver cancer action plan. As the only nonprofit in the United States solely devoted to fighting liver cancer, Blue Faery was invited to give our perspective about the disease.
